Rimworld: 3 colonists, 1 planet

33 posts in this topic

rimworld.png

Rimworld came out officially on Steam yesterday.

Rimworld is basically a space colony survival sim. Humans have spread out throughout the galaxy, but technological progress hasn't. Some places have recessed back to medieval technology, and some have become superpowerful "glitterworlds", clean, shiny, with advanced technological progress, bionics, and AI.

The game is designed for maximum drama, and tries to keep things as interesting as possible. I'll be playing on high difficulty, permadeath on. Which should keep things very interesting.

The game takes place where a spaceship breaks apart near a habitable world. Three survivors only barely manage to get to the escape pod, before it comes crashing down onto the world.

With whatever they have, they build a colony on the world and prepare to defend themselves from raiding tribes, scavengers, AI, and ayyliens.

As with the XCOM 2 AAR, sign-up a character. Hurry, positions are limited!

Quote

Nickname:
First and last name: (only if first three colonists)
Major skills: [shooting, melee, social, animals, medicine, cooking, construction, growing, mining, artistic, crafting, research]
Personality preferences?
Any limitations? [e.g. must be male, no slave background, not retarded]

I have no control over most things, including names, gender, family, background, profession, mental illnesses, obesity levels. So this is more a best fit to new colonists thing.

Character generation is basically bashing the random character button until you get someone suitable. I can't really control the handicaps.

Bob can perhaps saw off his left leg, replace it with a peg/bionic leg, then sell the leg off for guns. But he might not take it well~

Also research is one of the late game skills compared to shooting, construction, mining, but I can maybe roleplay it as a downed science vessel. The game auto-adjusts event difficulty so it could actually work.

I've never played so I don't really care.

I just want to be one of the 3 colonists.

Spoiler

I was going to do a test run, but got a near perfect starting colony roll. Maybe the genders are a bit off but that's part of the fun. But this will be a blind run; as with the XCOM game, I have never completed or even gone far in Rimworld before.

Sign ups are still open, for future colonists and slaves!

The science vessel Alethkar descends into low orbit over the planet Lutin. Scanners engage, searching the land for lifeforms, tribes, local cultures, and settlements.

In the core of human society were multiple forms of worlds. The glitterworlds are the luxurious example of what human society tries to become. Some planets were urbworlds, very dense places with poor standards of living.

Many light years away from this core lay the rimworlds - planets that have been colonized but were separated from the rest of society. Some of these world regress to industrial, medieval, and even neolithic society.

The science vessel Alethkar travels for decades from one planet to another, taking snapshots of these cultures to document them. All this is automated by the research vessel itself, requiring no interference from the crew. The crew only stays in cryptosleep only if human interference was needed.

Four planets, sixty years, and no problems. Except this time. Nobody knows what happened. Everyone was forced awakened from cryptosleep. There was barely enough time to get into the escape pods before the ship tore itself apart.

Our heroes plummet to this unknown rimworld.

Spoiler

The surviving crew:

Bob:

Spoiler

bob.png

A survivor of an apocalyptic battle. Her friends and family were brutally killed, traumatizing her and making her afraid of fire. She has seen so many deaths that nothing fazes her anymore. Her career is dedicated to saving lives and cutting up and learning about living creatures.

Eppie:

Spoiler

eppie.png

Spent most of his days struggling to survive due to a near fatal heart condition. He engineered and patented a new heart machine, and is respected as one of the best technobiologists in the universe. (Seriously, I've never seen anyone with 18 skill in anything)

Colony leader, Japan77:

Spoiler

japan77-start.png

Grew up in an overpopulated cyberpunk world run by corporations. Like Eppie, she grew up sickly and was forced for operate on himself to live. Unlike Eppie, she did not grow up on a fancy glitterworld with abundant resources. She forced her way into the corporations, up the career ladder, and did what it took to survive.

When Alethkar was raising funding for their exploration project, Japan77 fully funded it out of her own pocket to realize her dreams of being a scientist. As the only person with a Social skill higher than 1, she became the defacto leader of the colony.

As the leader, she's also the only person who gets to bring her own pet, Cerberus the cat, who has also survived the crash.

The colonists quickly get their bearings as soon as they crash and scavenge parts. These worlds were known for savage tribes and raiders who loot space crashes. It's very likely one of those raiders shot down the ship.

For their own safety, scout vessels were never equipped with advanced weapons and equipment. All they get were primitive industrial age weaponry, enough to fend off local wildlife, but not enough to attract pirates.

Although completely unskilled with guns, the survivors equip themselves with what they could:

Eppie: Survivor rifle
Japan77: Pistol
Bob: Plasteel knife

After scouting the area, Japan77 lays out a plan for colony development:

Spoiler

start.png

This area was chosen because of its geothermal activity. It's hard to find even two geothermal vents in a location, much less four of them like this. This should provide the colony with a huge surplus of power.

The first step would be sleeping rooms, so everyone can be well rested without being exposed to rain or sleeping in wet soil.

The next step would be to set up a proper kitchen, dining room, and stockpile.

There is a lot of very fertile land in this location, so we will begin strawberry farming soon.

Defenses will be set up soon. A kill zone with wet soil will be cleared out so we can blast any intruders with gunfire before they can run for cover and snipe our colonists. A small fortress will be carved out of the mountain. Mountains are resistant even to nuclear blasts, and certainly against mortar fire. Our fortress shall have its own armory, bedrooms, hydroponics, and jail cells for prisoners. And of course, lots of ambush zones to kill potential pirates.

Setting up basic survival

Spoiler

Everyone in the colony are nerds with no real world skills like construction, cooking, growing food, hunting, or mining. But no matter what, we still need a roof over everyone's heads.

We start with the bare basics. There's a damaged building near the planned bedroom zone. Japan77 renovates it into a couple of crude bedrooms.

Japan77 is still a little sick from cryptosleep. He really has no idea how to break down a wall other than bashing it with a stone, so the others come and help him in this seemingly trivial task. Bob is even more hopeless than Japan77 at construction so we make him scavenge for raw materials instead.

Obviously we're going to need some slaves around here to do all this dirty work. Japan77 requests three prisoner containment cells right behind the bedrooms, with steel doors.

day1.png

By the end of Day 1, the rooms are still barely incomplete, leaving everyone to sleep in the cold dark rain on the wet floor.

visitors.png

A couple of traders come by on Day 3, from a nearby trading town. They don't have any skills or equipment that make them worth enslaving, however. Also that French guy looks pretty big, has a club, and looks like he can beat up all three of us with his hands alone.

ripoff.png

Their prices are quite a ripoff or Japan77 is just a really poor negotiator. But we'll take the awful shotgun anyway; it seems to be easier than stabbing.

bedroomdone.png

By Day 4, we have our bedrooms and prison cells set up.

industry.png

We have a wooden storehouse. Another room crams the kitchen, dining room, and research bench all into one.

There's even a very limited defense pit - enough for a few nerds with guns to stay low and try and shoot something. The colonists have not proven very successful with hunting. It takes a long time and a lot of bullets just to kill a simple fox. Hopefully we'll be able to knock out and interrogate a traveller eventually with decent gun skills.

We're naming the colony Rinworld, as suggested by @Kosonome

Chapter 2: New friends

Spoiler

So some guy walks into the colony, shirtless. Requests to join because he has no friends and nowhere to go. Apparently some sad story about losing his family in a war too.

krystof.png

Let's call him Krystof.

He doesn't have any decent skills. But at least he can lift a few bricks and seems enthusiastic enough. We'll send him to go mining and clean up the bedrooms. He's not bad with strawberries either and doesn't cry when the gun recoils.

krystofgardening.png

He manages to set up our garden rather quickly.

Day 5: A raider arrives. Apparently he's a great swordsman from a nearby kingdom, arriving with only a badly crafted shiv. I guess he got kicked from his kingdom for raiding?

For fuck's sake, he's not even wearing a shirt! It doesn't even seem worth mobilizing the troops or trying to take him alive. A shotgun blast should bring down.

gravedigging.png

Japan77 starts digging up a graves to prepare for him and future raiders.

The great news is we didn't kill him! This opens all sorts of options, from slavery to seduction to organ farm.

Bob does a poor job of healing the prisoner.

Krystof: "I thought you had medical experience with gunshots!"
Bob: "We're saving the medicine for the people who matter."

However, the prisoner makes a full recovery, with barely even a scar.

The colony discusses what should be done with him. It is decided that they will try to recruit him because he's the only one with even decent skills in combat.

He joins pretty quickly. I think Ragnar is a fitting nickname for a skilled medieval fighter with a mohawk.

raiders2.png

A second group of raiders arrive at midnight. These guys look like a proper raiding group, with shotguns and stone clubs.

defending2.png

Everyone huddles in the partially completed bunkers, with the melee fighters behind low cover. Some of the colonists are cranky from the heat and being woken up in the middle of the night to stand all night a dirty trench.

5 long, painful hours after the alert is sounded, the pirates begin their assault.

raid2.png

The pirates choose to assault our chairs instead of our fortress. Those monsters! Ragnar, having the weapon with the longest range, breaks from cover and snipes at one of the more elderly enemies who was too slow to join the table breaking party.

The pirate pins down Ragnar with heavy fire so Japan77 and Krystof run out to assist. Krystof takes a bullet to the arm!

Krystof crawls closer to the enemy to get into shotgun range. A bullet rips off his arm! That can't be good.

After a three hour long battle, the colonists kill one of the raider and knock out another. Unfortunately, Japan77's cat Cerberus was beaten to death by one of the raiders.

Chapter 3: A rough day

Spoiler

After that last battle, the colonists propose a few changes:

  1. All doors to workshops must be locked during a raid.
  2. Prisoner rooms be moved to within the fortress.
  3. The sandbags were vulnerable to sniper fire from any enemy, so should we face snipers, the entire group should be ready to defend with traps within the fortress.
  4. A sterile "hospital room" to deal with medical problems.

noarm.png

Unfortunately, Bob was unable to rescue Krystof's arm and had to amputate it.

Our prisoner was not very happy either and punched Japan77 while he was feeding him. He later went berserk, tried to break free, and Ragnar stabbed him in the head until he fell unconscious. Then he work up, crawled out of his cell despite his injuries, before Ragnar found him and dragged him back to his cell. This happened thrice. By the third time Ragnar just took a gun and put 6 bullets into his chest.

raid3.png

Another raid comes in while the colonists sleep. People barely had time to run into place when the raiders hit. Despite only having one hand, Krystof quickly downs one of the raiders with his shotgun.

Another pirate dives into cover and manages to hit Krystof in the foot. The others quickly down him.

The remaining raiders retreat. Eppie gets a lucky shot and hits one of them in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious immediately. The pirate drops an assault rifle and some body armor. We drag her to the cells but she seems to have taken permanent brain damage.

fire.png

Night 7: A small fire started due to some lightning. It was negligible at first, but grew to the whole colony. The colonists spend two nights straight trying to put it out.

Japan77 got pissed off and cranky spending the whole day in the heat stomping on fires. He gets into an argument with Ragnar.

japanberserk.png

In the heat of the argument, he fired a bullet at Ragnar and Ragnar shot back.

japaninjuries.png

Ragnar really doesn't hold back. 10 gunshots, two to the lungs and one to the heart. It's a miracle Japan77 is still alive.

Thanks to Bob's medical skills, Japan77 heals all those gunshot wounds by morning. One of his fingers is missing though.

The fire has burnt itself out by morning. Japan77 and Ragnar apologize to each other for losing their tempers in the heat of the moment.

Eppie gets the refrigeration unit up and running. We now have cold storage of meat and cooked food and won't need to worry about starvation.

I killed a man as well.

Chapter 4: Thrumbo hunting
====

Spoiler

thrumbo.png

We found a Thrumbo on our lands. These creatures are extremely rare, expensive, and meaty creatures. Looks like this could fetch a lot on a black market somewhere.

inpositionthrumbo.png

Everyone moves into position.

thrumbochasing.png

They fire at it. Eppie gets the first hit and enrages it. It chases Eppie down, charging with its horn. Even after being shot all over, it's fast!

thrumbochasing2.png

Eppie continues to run around in circles, like Scooby Doo being chased by a monster.

It changes its attention to Krystof and tears into Krystof's remaining arm. Ragnar panics in the chaos and accidentally shoots Krystof and Japan77.

thrumbodead.png

After dozens of bullets, the majestic creature finally falls.

thrumbohorn.png

Looks like its horn is worth a lot more than its fur! $3000. That's like a year's supply of food rations.

Eppie and Ragnar drag the body back, while Bob tends to the injuries of the others.

thrumbofur.png

Eppie strips the fur off the creature. He botches it quite a bit, but what we get was definitely worth it. It seems to make great armor, so I don't think we'll be selling this.

The next step would be to find a willing buyer for all this. The horn would make a great sword, but perhaps we'd be better off buying a couple of machine guns with it.

It's badly damaged but looks like he'll recover. Priority would be buying a cooler bionic arm once we sell the horn later.

It's the weekend. Let me have a life lol. I literally can't update on my phone because it's a PC game. And the forums suck while on mobile.

Chapter 5: Ethics review

=================

Spoiler

braindead.png

That raider we shot a while ago is practically brain dead. She can barely move or think.

Ragnar: "She's practically dead. Can we cut that arm off and put it on Krystof?"
Bob: "That's not how it works."
Ragnar: "Fine, but I'm stripping her of her armor."

hospital.png

Our hospital is complete. The walls and floor are sanitized to prevent infections.

Bob: "I'm going to test the medical facilities."
Japan77: "K."

Bob comes back a few hours later covered in blood, with a box in his hand.

kidney.png

Bob: "It works."
Japan77: "What the fuck? Did you just take a kidney out of the prisoner?"
Bob: "She's brain dead. I figure we might as well take spare parts now before we need them. We can sell them too."
Ragnar: "What the fuck, Bob? She's not some machine that we can just pull organs out before they break down."
Bob: "But you just said to take her arm."
Ragnar: "Only do it as a last resort, when we need it!"
Bob: "Okay, but I still think she's a waste of resources if we're not going to do anything with her."

The entire colony is a little traumatized by this event. Except Bob. Bob doesn't get it.

Japan77 and Ragnar take it particularly badly. Japan just sits around depressed and Ragnar overeats.

base.png

Our new research lab is finally complete. We'll soon have geothermal power as soon as Eppie can figure it out. We placed the lab deep into the mountain so that raiders don't blow up all the expensive equipment. We've also upgraded the base with a shiny new comms terminal which can contact spaceships.

tribalraid.png

Another raiding party has arrived. This looks like a big one, but they're all armed with close combat weapons.

japancrazy.png

Japan77 ignores the order to head into the fortress. He decided to take his clothes off and stand in the middle of the woods.

Ragnar is just sitting in the kitchen and refuses to talk to anyone.

Eppie: "Ragnar, if you're not going to use that assault rifle, can I borrow it?"
Ragnar: "So we can get more prisoners to use as organ farms. Fuck that!"
Eppie: "It's an emergency!"
Ragnar: "Do you want some bullets up your ass?"
Eppie: "No."

Eppie runs off to fire at a few raiders, while Krystof and Bob run over. Japan77 is shot dead with a tribal bow!

eppiesolo.png

Eppie gets one kill but is forced to hold off the rest while the reinforcements come.

bobarrowed.png

Bob takes an arrow to the knee, but still manages to fight back.

Eppie scores a second kill today. Not bad for someone with only a gun who "can't shoot".

Bob takes a second arrow to the lung after a long standoff. Krystof and Bob charge forward to get into range of the archer.

battlefield.png

A few more deaths later, the tribals choose to retreat.

Our final count:

  • Bob needs arrows pulled out of his lung and knee
  • Eppie has severe club bruises all over his body
  • Krystof his foot shattered by a club
  • Eppie gets 4 out of 5 kills today
  • Japan77 finally went insane and dies dramatically, naked in a field of dandelions

Also, I've been playing around with organ farming in my Rimworld game. Currently, it causes one of my colonist to go on a rampage once every few days.
