In the right places in the US, going due east will land you around Cadiz, Spain.

I'd go with that. Canada is a solid choice as well, ofc. But Spain has always seemed neat to me.

Ooooooo. I was thinking South and Mexico but then you said this. Due east of me (actually, us :P) would land us in Portugal. Due east of where I grew up would be the Canary Islands...... decisions, decisions....

    Possible Spoilers in These

    Spoiler
Why was Marie-Laure’s father arrested in Paris? What were they trying to accuse him of? What do you think happened to him in the end?M

Before Werner and Marie-Laure part so she can go somewhere safe, he tells her she’s brave. On page 469, she says, “When I lost my sight, Werner, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don’t you do the same?” He responds, “Not in years. But today. Today maybe I did.” Let’s talk about this moving exchange.

Why do you think Marie-Laure gave Werner the little iron key? Why might Werner have gone back for the wooden house but left the Sea of Flames

After Frederick is dismissed from school, Werner reflects, “Frederick said we don’t have choices, don’t own our lives, but in the end it was Werner who pretended there were no choices, Werner who watched Frederick dump the pail of water at [the prisoner’s] feet–I will not.”
How do you think Frederick would explain this situation if he were able to speak for himself? Do you think his decision to have mercy on the prisoner allowed him to take ownership over his life?

Why is it significant that both Jutta and Marie-Laure go on to have children by the end of the novel?

Despite her efforts to avoid being involved with the Nazi party during World War II, Jutta feels ashamed of being German for decades after the war has ended. Where do you think this shame is coming from? Have you ever been in a situation where you carried shame or guilt for the actions of others?

Werner is fascinated by the inner workings of mechanical systems like radios. However, when he hears German society referred to as a “great machine,” he is repulsed by the comparison.
How are humans like machines, and how are we unlike machines? Why might it be frightening or disgusting to imagine ourselves as machines?

  3. Enjoying the book? Tell us what you love! Came across an exciting/shocking part? Don't hold it in! Have questions? Ask away! The world is your oyster.

I'll update this post when we have the date for the VC discussion. In the meantime, if you have anything you want to talk about regarding the novel, go for it!

    RULES

There is only one: Be respectful of people still reading the book. That means use spoiler tags and note the chapter you want to discuss on the outside of the tag, so people know where you're at and what's safe to open up. Example:

    Chapter 15

    Spoiler

Hi. I am a spoiler. Thanks for hiding me here.

    Have fun!

  4. I wavered a bit between "no" and "yes, but not well". I've been taught(ish) but never actually done much driving outside of those limited sessions. I could probably figure it out more or less if I needed to based on what I have been taught, but I haven't tried.

  5. I don't know that I would consider myself as really being able to play anything at present. I played violin in elementary school and French horn, tuba, and trombone in high school but haven't touched any of them since I graduated. I've been assured it's easy to pick back up if I ever want to be we'll see about that. I can play Mary Had a Little Lamb like a pro on piano. I like to sing. No idea if I'm really any good at it, but I enjoy it.

Went into the field for work the other day and afterwards, we decided to lunch here so I took this picture while eating lunch on a rock in front of this lake. It was a good day all in all :)

  7. I don't but I've had to keep mini-diary type things on some trips when I've done them for school and logs when I would do science research class. I've though about at least keeping a journal for when I travel because I regret not having one for my private travels like I have for my school trips. I'm planning to at least write the places I've been so far on my own and write down the stories I have as I remember them and then I'll just write new ones as I go.

And then I've started a bullet journal recently. Just for figuring out things I want to do with my life, where I want to go, writing down books I've read and things I like, etc. Not a diary diary but still diary-adjacent.

If we did this poll with age groups included, I would bet that it's mostly 90s kids and older who made tie dye shirts :D

And probably a heavy American skew

I feel like it takes a lot of artistic flair to make a good tie dye shirt.  I have very little of that, so my answer should be obvious. XD

It's actually not as bad as you think. It mostly comes down to knowing how to tie them and washing them out well.

Not sure what’s worse, you using this phrase or that it gives me a ballpark idea of the number in question.

I've been trying to think tbh. I've been to quite a few amusement parks. I've definitely ridden 21+ rides, not 100% sure about 21+ unique roller coasters but it's probably pretty close if not and it's definitely way over that for total roller coaster rides. I'm not sure which we're counting but assuming the former.

  11. I know someone who can bowl a perfect 300. I'll make him sign a contract saying he has to split the money evenly with me for finding this opportunity and then give him all the details.

I want a video of everyone who voted yes doing a cartwheel

When I was a kid, I would do cartwheels, round offs (a cartwheel where your feet meet midair and then you land on both feet at the same time instead of one after the other), and I was trying to do one handed cart wheels as well but I was only really successful at those if I looped my thumb into a belt loop otherwise my hand would try and make an escape to join the other.

Well there are British and American versions of the books. Obviously, Jim Dale was given the American book to narrate to the American audiences. That doesn’t make him less British, though, just like reading the British version of the books won’t make me more British lol

Okay, gotcha. Well, I will amend my prior statement to "...and the narrator isn't reading it in a British accent."

I wonder why a playlist doesn’t run your audio files continuously. I bet it stops right in the middle of the action too xD ah, the days of switching to the next CD..

It stops at the end of every chapter iirc.

BRUUUHH   Jim Dale IS British 😂

And he had 4 hits on the UK music thing  (which I never would have guessed)

I’ve heard a sample of Mr. Fry reading HP, but he didn’t participative in any of the HGTTG things I found.

I started with an hour of Douglas Adams performing his favorite parts solo. Then found the HGTTG Tertiary Phase & its 2 sequels, which were a modern full cast production much like the original radio. Then the actual individual books read by Martin Freeman. Finally the ultimate Guide to HGTTG read by a random American.

nowhere was Stephen Fry 😂😂😂 gods this just adds to the nonsense that is HGTTG

Is he actually? Lmao. I swear to God, he did not sound it when I listened to the audiobooks and I swore he used American substitutions for British words and I hated them because of it. But now I'm listening to an excerpt and am thinking maybe I'm just batshit crazy. Maybe I confused him with someone else? Idfk.

My mom has the Stephen Fry audiobook versions that she ripped from a CD but listening to those is annoying because I can't get them to move continuously from one to another on my phone.

Audible has the Jim Dale version of HP and the Stephen Fry version of Hitchhiker's Guide.

I’ll start by commenting that this book series is very very British.

for those of you using audiobooks, find a British narrator. American narrators just don’t translate well. You miss all the humor.

For those of you reading it yourself, use a British accent while doing so.
(double points if you are British already)

100% agree and will also say this is true for the Harry Potter audiobooks. No offense to Jim Dale, it just doesn't hit the same if it's about British people and the narrator isn't British. Stephen Fry narrates both HP and Hitchhiker's Guide and it's just much better for it, even if he can't pronounce "pocketed".

Want to thank @Opa-Athenalite and @Canbec for coming to the book club discussion last night. It was a really good time and I enjoyed chatting with the both of you. Hope to see more of you there next time.

One of the things we talked about during the call was learning from the book's intro that Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was originally written as a radio show and then adapted into books (and later movies). I went online this morning and found the original radio show segments so if anyone is interested, you can listen to them here: http://www.radionouspace.net/programs/hitchhikers-guide/.
